Meat is very unlikely. The one thing we can't rule out is a trace of alcohol used to carry the flavor, so these are Halal · small doubt.

Either kind becomes fully Halal with a halal certificate from a certifier we accept, or when the brand tells us the flavor isn't from an animal and no alcohol is used to make or carry it.

We go by the product's category and its name. A word such as “chicken”, “BBQ”, “ranch” or “cheese” in the name keeps a product savory, even in a sweet category like chocolate. When we can't tell what kind of product it is, it stays Doubtful · low. Every result shows what we went by, with a link to tell us if we got it wrong.

What the law allows

This is how US law defines natural flavor (21 CFR 101.22(a)(3)):

The term natural flavor or natural flavoring means the essential oil, oleoresin, essence or extractive, protein hydrolysate, distillate, or any product of roasting, heating or enzymolysis, which contains the flavoring constituents derived from a spice, fruit or fruit juice, vegetable or vegetable juice, edible yeast, herb, bark, bud, root, leaf or similar plant material, meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, dairy products, or fermentation products thereof, whose significant function in food is flavoring rather than nutritional.

So a label can say “natural flavors” whether the flavor came from strawberries or from chicken.

Artificial flavors are Halal · small doubt in any product, sweet or savory. By law they aren't made from animals, so the only question is a trace of alcohol used to carry the flavor. The law defines them as flavors “which is not derived from a spice, fruit or fruit juice, vegetable or vegetable juice, edible yeast, herb, bark, bud, root, leaf or similar plant material, meat, fish, poultry, eggs, dairy products, or fermentation products thereof” (21 CFR 101.22(a)(1)).

What the label leaves out

Flavor recipes are trade secrets, and the law doesn't ask makers to name the source. Anything used only to make a flavor, such as the alcohol it is dissolved in, doesn't have to be listed either when only a trace ends up in the food. The rule for that is 21 CFR 101.100(a)(3):

Incidental additives that are present in a food at insignificant levels and do not have any technical or functional effect in that food.

Very few labels in our catalog say what a flavor is dissolved in.

Vanilla extract and vanilla flavor

US law says vanilla extract must contain at least 35% alcohol (21 CFR 169.175). The alcohol is part of it, so vanilla extract is Haram. Vanilla flavor is made the same way with less than 35% alcohol; the TTB, which regulates it, calls it “vanilla flavor”. It usually still contains alcohol, so it is Doubtful · high.

There is no rule like that for “natural flavors”. Many are never made with alcohol, and when one is, only a trace may reach the food. Nobody has shown the alcohol is there, and a possibility on its own doesn't make food haram.

The only question left is a possible trace of alcohol used to carry a flavor. Nothing on the label shows it is there, and a doubt like this doesn't cancel what is permissible, so the product counts as halal. A halal certificate, or the maker confirming there's no alcohol and no animal source, makes it fully halal.

BBQ chips with natural flavors are Doubtful · low, because the flavor could be made from meat. Fruit snacks with natural flavors are Halal · small doubt, because meat is very unlikely and only a trace of carrier alcohol is possible.

The badge is the Halal check drawn as an outline, always with the words “small doubt”. We don't use a lighter green, because light green is the health score's “Good”.

Alcohol used to carry a flavor stays in it

When a flavor is dissolved in alcohol, the alcohol isn't washed out or cooked off before the flavor goes into the food. It stays in the flavor. The flavor is a tiny part of the food, so the alcohol is a trace. IFANCA, a US halal certifier, writes: “It is permissible to use alcohol for extracting the flavors or dissolving them”, but “the amount of alcohol should be reduced to less than 0.5% in the final flavoring product”, and “A finished product must have less than 0.1% alcohol.” The American Halal Foundation's guide to chocolate puts alcohol first among the things to check, and says where it shows up: “Liquor-filled centers, vanilla extracts, carrier solvents”.

Alcohol that is listed on the label is haram, whatever the product.

What settles it

A halal certificate from a certifier we accept makes it fully Halal.
A reply from the brand saying the flavor isn't from an animal and no alcohol is used makes it fully Halal. If the reply only covers the animal source, it is Halal · small doubt.
A vegan certificate rules out meat but says nothing about alcohol, so a vegan product whose only question is flavors is Halal · small doubt.
Kosher certification doesn't count here, because some kosher flavors are made with alcohol.

To ask a brand, tap Ask the brand on the result. The email asks whether any of the flavor comes from an animal, and whether alcohol is used to make or carry it. Most people treat natural flavors as permissible. If you want to be extra careful, choose certified products.
