For meat, the certifier and how the animal was slaughtered are the verdict. We name the certifier and quote its own policy.
The root rule: the animal must die from the slaughter. Everything else follows from this.
- Hand slaughter by a Muslim or a kitabiyy is required. Machine slaughter is haram, following Darul Fatwa.
- Stunning before the cut is accepted only if it's reversible: the animal would recover if left alone. In practice that means lamb, sheep and goat. Stunned cattle and poultry are Doubtful · high. Some authorities, including halal.ua (2015), reject electrical stunning entirely. We follow Darul Fatwa here, and the result shows a Scholars differ note, so you can see the difference for yourself.
- Stunning after the cut is accepted only when the certifier makes clear it isn't what caused death.
- No halal certification: meat is Haram.
- Kosher certification from an agency on our accepted list: kosher meat is hand slaughtered by a Jewish slaughterer (a kitabiyy) with no stun before the cut, so it passes, with the kitabiyy tag. Kosher beef and veal from Australia, Austria or Finland are Doubtful · high: the law there requires a stun straight after the cut, and we can't confirm it was the cut, not the stun, that killed the animal. When we don't know where kosher beef was slaughtered, it passes, because we found no sign of a stun after the cut in kosher plants in the USA or the UK. A plain “K” or “kosher-style” counts for nothing.
- Specific plants: HMS doesn't say a stun must be one the animal would recover from, so HMS lamb is Doubtful · high. Lamb, sheep and goat from HMS-approved plants in New Zealand and Australia pass, because the government halal rules there require reversible stunning; we match the plant number on the pack. Never beef or poultry.
- Certification from an agency that allows machine slaughter or a killing stun: Doubtful · high. Those methods are haram, but the agency may also certify hand slaughter, so this particular product might have been hand slaughtered. That possibility is the only reason it isn't marked Haram, and doubtful meat is still not permissible to eat.

If the animal recovers and returns to its natural state after having been stunned, then the animal was slaughtered, it remains lawful (halal) to consume it even though at the time of slaughtering the animal was in a state where it cannot see or hear and is unable to move. This is because the shock in itself did not result in the animal’s death.

The meat of an animal slaughtered by someone other than these three kinds of people is Islamically non-edible meat (maytah). One then understands that the mechanical slaughter done by the automatic machines renders the meat not Islamically edible.
Note : The automatic slaughtering machine is not approved Islamically as a method of valid slaughtering as it does NOT meet one of the conditions stated above (i.e. the hand-slaughter by either a Muslim or kitabiyy).

However, if the animal is deemed to be dead after being stunned, then is NOT fit for Halal consumption under the Islamic laws and principles of Halal slaughter, unless one is certain that the animal was alive at the time of the slaughtering, evidence of which would be the gushing or spurting of blood.
